LAKE SHKODRA RECEIVES UNESCO RECOGNITION!
One of Albania’s most valuable natural treasures has received a new international recognition. UNESCO has designated Lake Shkodra as a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, officially including it in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
From the shores of the largest lake in the Balkans to its wetlands, rivers, mountains, and surrounding landscapes, this area represents an exceptional natural and cultural heritage, where unique biodiversity is intertwined with the traditions, history, and way of life of local communities.
This recognition is the result of years of dedicated work, culminating in the submission of the nomination dossier to UNESCO in September 2025, following an extensive process of cooperation among institutions, experts, partners, and local communities in Albania and Montenegro.
The designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve confirms the global significance of Lake Shkodra and places it among territories that serve as models for nature conservation, sustainable development, and the harmonious coexistence of people and nature.
